Peru Dogs

I have a good friend who retired more than a few years back who has been sailing around Mexico and has posted pictures of the "local dogs" who just lie in doorsteps, hang out on the streets, etc. Well, I saw it for myself, how different the dogs are in Peru too. They are just roaming the streets freely, easy going, lying on doorsteps, barely even lifting their heads as the world goes by. Most of the males are intact, but don't act any differently than any of the other dogs. Many of the dogs we saw were looking for food, but they are so different in that they are not obnoxious about it, they just sit there and stare, no jumping up or pawing as dogs here in America do when they beg.

So different than our dogs in America who live in a sheltered world of fences and boundaries, and are wound up so tight. Makes you kind of wonder what people visiting America think of dogs with all their energy, wearing foo-foo clothes, leashes, etc. In some respects, our dogs have a lot to learn (or maybe it is us people who have a lot to learn) from the Peruvian dogs...

Here are a few pics of the dogs we met along the way:

This cute little guy was at one of the rest stops on our hike, I was eating a banana and he was just hoping I would give him something. He was so sweet, looks like some sort of shepherd mix but much smaller (or just young)...

This guy came up to us on Day 1 of our hike at our campsite. Sharon and I were arranging things in our tent and he just came by and stood there. He too, was very sweet, and probably just looking for a snack. Easy going, didn't try to come into the tent or anything. Later, he went over and visited Nathan...

On the hike, we saw mostly medium-sized dogs like the ones pictured above. In the cities, there was more of a mixture of sizes, even teeny little purse-sized dogs. All the same, without that edge that our American dogs seem to have....interesting.
